Some experiences leave lasting emotional wounds that don’t simply fade with time.

Even when you want to move forward, painful memories, negative beliefs, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions can continue to affect your daily life, relationships, and sense of self.

You may find yourself feeling constantly on edge, avoiding certain places or situations, struggling to trust others, or reacting to reminders of past experiences in ways that feel difficult to control. Maybe you’ve tried everything to feel better, and nothing has worked.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and healing is possible.

At Unite Counseling & Therapy, we offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy to help teens, young adults, adults, couples, and families process distressing experiences, reduce emotional distress, and build lasting resilience. Our goal is to help you move beyond surviving and begin truly living again – in Suwanee, Gwinnett County, and all across Georgia with convenient online therapy.

Imagine thinking about a painful memory without feeling overwhelmed by it.

Imagine sleeping more peacefully, feeling calmer throughout the day, and no longer living in a constant state of anxiety or hypervigilance.

Imagine feeling confident that your past no longer controls your present.

Imagine being able to finally feel like moving forward is possible.

Healing doesn’t erase what happened—it changes the way those memories affect your life today.

When Trauma Continues to Affect Your Life

Trauma can result from a single event or from repeated experiences over time. Sometimes the effects appear immediately, while other times they develop months or even years later.
You may benefit from EMDR Therapy if you’re experiencing:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • PTSD or Complex PTSD
  • Distressing memories
  • Childhood trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship trauma or betrayal
  • Low self-esteem
  • Chronic stress
  • Emotional numbness
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Negative self-beliefs
  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Fear, shame, or guilt related to past experiences

Many people believe they should “just get over it,” but trauma affects both the brain and the body. Healing often requires more than simply talking about what happened.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help the brain process distressing memories and experiences in a safe environment to heal from intense or lingering trauma.

When a traumatic or highly stressful event occurs, the brain may become “stuck.” Causing memories, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs to remain as intense as when the experience first happened. We may not even be aware of how or when this happened, but we are aware that something doesn’t feel right.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess those emotions and experiences in the present so they become less emotionally overwhelming. This allows healthier beliefs and perspectives to develop and ‘unblock’ the healing process.

Unlike some traditional forms of therapy, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly retell every detail of your experience. Instead, therapy focuses on helping your brain naturally process unresolved memories while you remain grounded and supported throughout a guided process.

How EMDR Can Help

EMDR Therapy has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and many other concerns.

Clients often seek EMDR to address:

  • PTSD and Complex PTSD
  • Childhood trauma
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Medical trauma
  • Relationship trauma
  • Abuse
  • Accidents
  • Stressful life experiences
  • Performance anxiety
  • Negative self-worth
  • Excessive Guilt & Shame

Many clients notice that memories begin to feel less emotionally charged, allowing them to respond to present-day situations with greater confidence and emotional balance.

EMDR may be a good fit if you feel like painful memories and beliefs continue to affect your daily life, even when you’ve tried to move forward.

Many clients seek EMDR after noticing that traditional talk therapy alone hasn’t fully resolved their symptoms. Others simply want an evidence-based approach that addresses both the emotional and physical effects of trauma.

Whether your experiences happened recently or many years ago, healing is possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have PTSD to benefit from EMDR?
No. While EMDR is well known for treating PTSD, it can also be effective for anxiety, grief, childhood experiences, relationship trauma, panic attacks, negative self-beliefs, and other distressing life events.
Will I have to talk about every detail of my trauma?
Not necessarily. EMDR does not require clients to share every detail of their experiences. Your therapist will guide the process in a way that feels safe, respectful, and appropriate for your comfort level.
Is EMDR appropriate for children?
Yes. EMDR can be adapted for children and adolescents when developmentally appropriate. Sofia provides EMDR for children ages 8 and older using age-appropriate, trauma-informed interventions.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The length of treatment varies depending on your history, goals, and the complexity of your experiences. Some clients experience meaningful relief in a relatively short period, while others benefit from longer-term therapy.
